Wildroot Hair Tonic was invented by chemist Emanuel Gundlach in Buffalo, New York in 1911 and the company was locally owned and operated until 1959 when Colgate-Palmolive Co. bought the company. The original factory and 1937 office building have been vacant since the mid 1970's. Emanuel Gundlach was the father of physicist Robert W. Gundlach, widely credited with the development of the modern photocopier.
