Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery

Savior St. Jacob Spaso-Yakovlevsky Monastery (Спасо-Яковлевский монастырь) is a Russian Orthodox monastery situated on the bank of the lake Nero to the left from the Kremlin of Rostov, Russia. The monastery was founded by St. Jacob, Bishop of Rostov, in 1389. Initially it was called the Conception monastery, after its main church. Its present name finds the following explanation: St. Jacob was its founder, Savior - because Savior monastery was attached to it. In the cloister there were three churches: the St. Anna Conception cathedral, the St. Jacob of Rostov church and the church in honor of Dmitry of Rostov, the Bishop of Rostov. It has been greatly venerated as the shrine of St Dmitry. His imperishable relics was reposed here. Most of the monastery structures were built in the late 18th and early 19th centuries in the fine neoclassical style. There are also two 17th-century churches, dedicated to the Conception of St Anna and to the Transfiguration of Our Saviour. Unlike most other churches in the town, the monastery belongs to the Russian Orthodoxy and houses a theological seminary.
