chaswatson: The hedges of the maze are a bit bare in winter so you can see where you want to be but you still have to get there! Along the path, there are granite posts each with a plaque attached. The plaque shows a unique item such as an owl or a fish. These seem to be placed as guides to help find the way to the centre (see photos). Once at the centre, there is a circular feature about 50 feet in diameter. A compass rose forms the centre and curved blocks are arranged around it. The blocks are in two shades of grey (dark and light) and show the paths and hedges of the maze. There are bronze plaques set into the blocks that correspond to the granite blocks along the path so you can work out the route followed. From the centre of the maze there is an "emergency exit" that leads in a straight line back to a point close to the entrance.
