The Smithsonian does possess a 52-foot carousel, which was built in 1903 by famed carousel maker Gustav A. Dentzel (1840-1909) in Germantown, Pa., and was acquired by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in 1964. Some of Dentzel's hand-carved animals -- including a leaping rabbit and a cat with a fish in its mouth -- have been on display in the museum. The rest of the carousel is kept in storage.
