My dad, brother, and I raced RC cars competitively when I was a teenager, so I recognized this type of facility for what it was.
My favorite memory of racing was fighting off hundreds of mosquitoes while racing in a 500 lap asphalt oval race next to a swamp near McHenry, IL, in 1990. The race featured pit stops to change battery packs and tires, which was my only chance to swat at the bugs and scratch my itchy bites.
Did a little more research... the motocross track was planned to be built next to the RC tracks. It was shot down by the local government in February 2008 before anything was built. The RC track closed in August 2008 after the track operator lost his lease with the land owner.
It's an RC racing facility called Sun Valley Speedway (aka KZ Speedway). Not to be confused with a motorsports track of the same name in Canada. Three of the most popular types of RC races are held here - asphalt road course, dirt oval, and off-road.
I couldn't find a web site for this track, but there are several RC racing sites and forums which confirmed it's identity for me.
Nope, it's not a firehouse. It's part of a neighborhood of warehouses and small factories. They spruced up this building by painting the doors and adding signs and fixtures to make it look real. They were also crafty about camera angles to hide the fact it's a one story building.
This POS won Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year and was ranked #1 by Car and Driver magazine in 1983. They were built in my hometown, and I've helped push a few of them out of the road.
A google news archive search turned up a snippet from a Lexington Herald Leader article...
Feb. 20, 2007 - "Fire damaged a Nicholasville home in an affluent neighborhood on Avenue of Champions yesterday afternoon, officials said. It started near a garage on one ..."
It costs three bucks to read the rest of the article, if anyone is interested.
Bill's son Eric is an aspiring goaltender. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eric_Comrie
Bill was drafted by the Blackhawks, but quit the sport to help with the family's furniture business after his father passed away.
There is no reason to smile in Eagle today. At least 20 homes were destroyed or severely damaged by a tornado last night. Fortunately, only one person sustained minor injuries.
You might want to check the map again, anonymous. This is nowhere near Boulder Hwy. This is along Eastern Avenue. And besides, how many malls have a tennis court? (See Google view)
From what I understand, satellite cameras take a few layers of a photo within a fraction of a second. The layers are merged to produce the final image.
Between the speed of a very fast moving item, such as a jet, and the speed and direction of the satellite, a ghost image can be seen on one of the photo's layers.
The world record for the largest attendance at a hockey game (77,803) was set here at the 2010 IIHF World Championship tournament. Germany defeated the United States 2-1 in overtime in a preliminary round game.
The dam did not fail. Several days of heavy rain caused the lake to overflow along the northern shore between the lake and the Wisconsin River. The land quickly eroded and created a channel which caused the lake to empty. I visited the site three weeks after it happened, and it was quite a shock to see the empty lake. http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/2008-06-09-lake-delton-empties/
The oval track was modelled after the original design of the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It held it's first American-style stock car race in January 2010 with a 500 km ASA series event. The field featured drivers from the United States, Australia, Great Britain, and South Africa.
I dug a little further after getting home from work. The fairgrounds went by three names over the years - Cumberland County, Garden State, and Bridgeton Fairgrounds. The South Jersey Motor Club held the earliest events at the track.
The Cumberland County Fair web site mentions the fair was held at a location on Fayette Street from the 1890's to 1968. My previous link mentions that the track was located at the Cumberland County Fairgrounds. It's likely the track was also used for horse racing, as was common for fairground tracks in the early 1900's. http://www.cumberlandcofair.com/history.html
I believe this is the setup (or takedown) of the IndyCar Grand Prix event held at that end of the airport. Notice the barriers and curbs in the corners of the course.
Bing birds eye view came close to covering this spot. You can find some scenic views of the Colorado River just north of this location in the south and west view.
With the expansion project of I-94 underway, the business will move to a new 25,000 sq. ft. location in 2010. The new store is being built directly behind the original building, which opened in 1947. The famous sign will move to a new spot. The new building will incorporate a castle theme with turrets and drawbridge.
It's obstructed by a semi-trailer in the recent hi-res street view update. If you go a few clicks north or south, you can see the mural from a sharp angle.
I had a weird moment today. After approving this map this morning, I drove by this plane parked along the north edge of Milwaukee's airport this afternoon.
The pool is shaped like the Czech Republic. Their streams of water write famous quotes in the pool. They also write messages received from text messages sent to a number posted at the fountain. http://www.davidcerny.cz/en/piss.html
I drove by the land earlier this summer and found that the concession and scorers buildings have been torn down. I've been hoping that LGR could reopen just as Stockton 99 Speedway in California did after a housing development plan fell apart, but I doubt that the neighbors would allow it. http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/33022/
Nice first post. I wonder where she was supposed to be going. That entire area is residential... and no decent grocery stores within a few miles for a PR visit.

When the name changed in midseason last year, I caught several visiting TV announcers using the old name, either out of ignorance or out of habit.

By the way, I know this was our truck because the flap over the gas cap had a bad hinge and wouldn't close properly for the longest time.
