1976 – The Estádio Jacy Scaff, usually known as Estádio do Café, was inaugurated.

1989 – Huey Percy Newton, an African-American political and urban activist who, along with Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party in 1966, was fatally shot in West Oakland by 24-year-old Black Guerilla Family member, Tyrone Robinson.
