1848 – Phineas P. Gage (1823–1860), an American railroad construction foreman, survives an accident in which a large iron rod was driven completely through his head, destroying much of his brain’s left frontal lobe.

2008 – Riots at La Mesa Prison, caused by inmates upset over the death of an inmate in a prison search for drugs and weapons, kill 3 inmates.
