Aljafería, built in the 11th century, is one of the northernmost important Moorish buildings in Spain and the setting selected by Giuseppe Verdi for his famous opera Il Trovatore (The Troubadour). King Alfonso I of Aragon reconquered Zaragoza in 1118 and chose the city as his capital and Aljafería was used as the king's residence. The Aragonese parliament currently sits in the building.
