BSW was once a fountainhead of American industrial dominance, the second largest steel producer in the country and at one point the nation's largest shipbuilder. The company waned in the 80s during the U.S.'s manufacturing decline, leading to layoffs and plant closures, which inspired the Billy Joel hit "Allentown". Bethlehem Steel went bankrupt in 2001 and was sold to British-Indian Mittal Steel in 2005.
