The historic CF&I Mine Rescue Car No. 1 (MRC) is now open for tours during regular museum hours. Located behind the Steelworks Museum, this unique rail car served as a rolling rescue vehicle and ambulance, responding to accidents at CF&I coal mines in southern Colorado from 1923 to 1940. When not in use for emergencies, the MRC was a "rolling classroom" going to the various mines to teach mine safety to the employees and training on-site response teams. From that time until 1993 the MRC served as the office of the Scrapyard Foreman inside the steel mill.
