In 1895, partly due to the good rail communications at that time a mental hospital was built near Ryhope known as the Sunderland Lunatic Asylum, name later changed to Cherry Knowle Hospital. Today some of these great buildings are under threat of demolition to make way for the new smaller mental hospital.
