South of Kansas City is the former Richards-Gebaur AFB (or "Dicky Goober" to those personnel who were assigned there) which closed in 1980 but continued to be used by the USAF Reserve until 1994 when the tenant A-10 unit moved to Whiteman AFB in Sedalia, MO.

Richards-Gebaur AFB was active from 1955 to 1980, hosting the headquarters of the 29th Air Division of the Air Defense Command and later units of the Air Force Systems Command and Military Airlift Command.
