Daniel Webster, a native of New Hampshire, is widely regarded as one of the greatest senators of prodigious oratorical skills ever to serve in that capacity. Though he failed twice to obtain the presidency of the United States, his influence and power were far reaching. Together with colleagues from the south, Henry Clay and John Calhoun, he played a key role as part of the "Great Trimuvirate." As a staunch Federalist, he played a persuasive role opposing several secessionist movements. Webster later served as Secretary of State.
