Jens Nielsen, called Vejmand (roadworker), came to Tjørring in 1868 and in 1873 he began making cobblestones out of large rocks. He worked at this spot until he died in 1901. He was crippled, bad hands and partly blind with an eyeflap.

He is buried in Tjørring churchyard.

1902 the danish poet Jeppe Aakjær came here and met Jens' successor. He told Jeppe about Jens and got 25 Ører for it. When Jeppe Aakjær came home to his house Jenle he wrote the song about Jens sitting behind a shelter hammering stones. He finished it in 1905 and in 1907 the danish composer Carl Nielsen made the tunes to it.
