Connecting Kingston to Ottawa by a series of hand-cranked locks, this canal is still in operation and is used by pleasure boats. It was built from 1826 to 1831 by the British as an alternate route from the Great Lakes to Montreal, avoiding American gunfire on the St. Lawrence river. After the war of 1812, Canada feared the US would invade again. In the winter, people in Ottawa skate on it.
