The ship is built at N. F. Hansens shipyard in Odense 1895 and was classified at Lappegrunden north of Elsinore. From 1921 until 1972 was the majority of the time designated by Gedser Rev. The lightship was in 1921 equipped with a motor - a 3-cylindret Vølund ignited the main engines of 135 hp. Outfitting is from just after the war and is untouched by time.
Lightship XVII was donation from AP Møllers Fund for the National Museum in 1972. In 2000 the museum got a grant from APMøllers Fund for restoration work of the ship
