While skiing with his son, he strayed off-course into an area with several large rocks hidden by a recent snowfall. He fell and hit his head on a rock and was quickly airlifted to a nearby hospital. He was an advanced skier and was wearing a helmet. In the satellite photo, rocky areas between the ski paths are clearly visible.

In critical condition, he was transferred to a larger hospital in Grenoble, where he was placed under a medically-induced coma and underwent two surgeries. Michael remained in a coma until June 2014. He was released from the hospital to return home in September 2014.
Born in West Germany, Schumacher began racing in Formula One in 1991. Between 1994 and 2004, he dominated the sport with seven championship seasons. He owns several records in the sport, including most wins (91), most pole positions (68), and most championships. He retired in 2006, but returned to the sport from 2010-2012.
