John André (2 May 1750 – 2 October 1780) was a Major in the British Army in charge of British secret intelligence. Andre was instrumental in the turning of American General and traitor, Benedict Arnold. Andre was captured in New York after meeting with Arnold. Andre was tried as a spy and hanged on October 2, 1780. This simple gray marker commemorates the site of the hanging and was paid for by millionaire Cyrus W. Field in 1879.
