Melilla is one of two small enclaves of Spain located on Morocco's northern coast (the other is Ceuta). Morocco considers these territories to be illegally occupied, but they have been part of Spain since the country's existence.
Refugees from Morocco routinely try to escape into the Spanish territories. To stem illegal immigration, Spain has constructed 3m-high walls around both cities.
