Founded around 1080 by Ludwig der Springer, this was the largest of the Thuringian landgraves' castles; it was also associated with the life and work of St. Elisabeth of Thuringia. Later, during the Baroque period, the building was redeveloped as a residential palace and hunting lodge for the Saxon princes.
