National Historic Landmark that served as the state capitol from 1839 to 1903. It was restored in 1961 for use as the state historical museum, offering exhibits on the Civil War, the cotton culture and the Civil Rights Movement. A permanent exhibit entitled Mississippi 1500-1800, relates the state's settlement.
