My research has revealed it is a coast guard cutter which is a sister ship to the USS Potomac . BTW there is a second wreck located right next to this one. - possibly a wreck of one of the ferry boats? You can only see it a very low tide. Some satellite shots of the area reveal the ghostly outline of this second wreck.

@anonymus, If true, that's a big deal (in my world anyway, pretty sure no one else cares ;) )!

I found this listed in an interactive shipwreck map of California Shipwrecks [arcgis dot com] listed as the Sidewheel Steamboat, "City of San Raphael" Year Built: 1924; Year Sunk: 1943.

@anonymous, there are at least two two other wrecks towards the shore from this one and I think one of them is the City of San Rafael. The lines on this just aren't consistent with a Sidewheeler. Thanks for the info and the link though. It's always nice when you can put a name to a wreck!
