On March 22, 1943 the town of Khatyn and its inhabitants were burned as punishment for aiding Soviet partisans. Only eight of the 156 inhabitants survived the massacre.

The "Unbowed man" depicts Yuzif Kaminsky holding his dead son. Kaminsky was the only adult to survive.
