One of the greatest blunders in Canadian civil planning was the closure in 1966 of Grand Trunk Railway's Union Station in Ottawa. Opened in 1912 it was one of the first of North America's now-classic Beaux-Arts style railway stations. It was completed only two years after New York City's Penn Station and shared many of the same architectural features.
The beautiful structure in the heart of downtown Ottawa has since sat idle, as an underutilized conference center.
The loss of this perfectly placed railway hub, thanks to the shortsightedness of the National Capital Commission, has allowed Ottawa residents to enjoy some of the worst traffic congestion in Canada, for decades.
