The place where Königsberg Castle was (beginning 1257). The castle was bombed by the Royal Air Force during World War II in 1944 and burned down completely. Thanks to their thick walls, the ruins were able to withstand both air bombing and Soviet artillery, as well as city battles in April 1945.

Königsberg (renamed Kaliningrad in 1946) was to be rebuilt into a model town on the remnants of Königsberg, without preserving the reminders of the German past. Despite the protests, the castle ruins were blown up in 1968 by Leonid Brezhnev on personal orders. The castle tower was blown up in 1959.
