Founded as the Scottish Rite Convalescent Home for Crippled Children, the Old Scottish Rite Hospital served indigent children, either crippled or recovering from surgery. Michael Hoke, M.D., was named the first Medical Director. The hospital was originally a rented cottage in Decatur with 6 beds. As the "Scottish Rite Hospital for Crippled Children", 6 of its buildings are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. 5 were listed on 6/17/82, and 1 was listed on 9/4/04.
