Gargoyles and Grotesques

A gargoyle is a carved grotesque with a spout designed to direct rain water away from the side of a building, preventing rainwater from running down walls and causing water damage or staining.

Grotesques are often confused with gargoyles, but the distinction is that gargoyles are figures that contain a water spout through the mouth, while grotesques do not.
