I've noticed that *some* Street View thumbs no longer open to Street View, and so in the description there is a shortened URL that will take the visitor there. Two questions:
1. Why do *some* Street View thumbs no longer open in Street View? For example:
http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/elsa-von-freytag-loringhoven-appartment-former/
and
2. Shortened URLs are not "forever", eventually they get recycled. How is this going to play out?

This seems to be one of the "features" of the new Google Maps. It happens on some, but not all PhotoSphere and regular SV maps.

Quoting from edshelf.com regarding the Google URL shortener:
Quote:
Goo.gl short URLs are randomly generated, and the mappings of short URLs to long URLs are publicly accessible. Additionally, the short URL to long URL mappings are:
Immutable – once created by you, no one can change them Irrevocable – once created, they do not expire. Note, however, that Google reserves the right to remove any goo.gl short URL, for example for spam, security or legal reasons
I got this same info when I googled 'do goo.gl urls expire'. We'll probably just have to wait and see if they do get re-cycled, and address the issue then.

This issue has been fixed. Some time ago Google made a slight change to Street View URLs which resulted in VGT not recognizing them as Street View. Nic fixed the problem and updated all of the affected maps.

I have come across a few old maps that had shorted URLs, but they are now showing up as expanded URLs. Apparently they do expire, but at least they're replaced by links that work. Example: http://virtualglobetrotting.com/map/daf-xf105-ssc-tofra-specialtransporter/
