Because there can be characteristics of the thumbs from different times and sources that can change their applicability to the description or even the comments, especially over time.
For example, the Oprah Corn Maze actually looks very different in the different thumbs. To some extent, this is something you can explain in the comments.... until some site updates or changes its base images and the thumb gets updated. For example, if GMaps changed its base imagery from a set of a different point in time, the name of the Oprah Corn Maze map would make no sense!

It might also be interesting for larger structures in the BE view, where you could submit thumbs that pertain to different features, rather than having to settle for a very zoomed out view or picking one detail to represent the whole.
