I noticed that the Antarctic has been upgraded on the world map. The polar distortion has been fixed. Compare current to this thumbnail:

I think a lot of these pertain to just Google Earth though and not Google Maps. For instance Hiroshima doesn't look any clearer but is all there in high res in Google Earth. Bangalore is another.
