It occured to me just now that one way to help avoid dupes might be to add a search by lat/lon feature. It would in theory use the same method as Find Nearby except it would use a user-entered position.
This would at least give people an easy way to see if the spot they are adding is already there, perhaps with a slightly different name, etc.

In the "What would you like to see" thread in another section I mentioned that the moderators had been discussing distance calculation issues for another reason. This is very close to the reason. And it really has exactly the same problems that would be had with giving users the ability to check for nearby before they submit. The system would have to compute the distance to all 9,000+ entries in order to give results. This takes 15-20 seconds or more per location calculated, and pretty much locks up the site while the site computer is doing the calculations. This is not a huge problem if one person does it, but what if 50 people do it at the same time?
We're still trying to come up with a solution, but have really not had any brilliant ideas yet.
