On September 7, 2011, the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl KHL hockey team boarded a plane at Tunoshna Airport. They were heading to Belarus for their first game of the season. The passengers included 26 hockey players, 11 team staff members, and 8 flight crew employees.
Just after takeoff, the plane struck a tower and crashed into the Volga River. Two people survived the initial crash - one Russian hockey player and a flight crew member, but the hockey player succombed to his injures days later.
Among those who died were NHL veterans Pavol Demitra, Ruslan Salei, Karlis Skrastins, Josef Vasicek, and Brad McCrimmon (the team's head coach).
