The famed Elgin Theatre stood on this location. It is widely regarded as the birthplace of the modern "multiplex" cinema, when owner Nat Taylor began offering a different film to audiences on his second screen "Little Elgin" in 1957.
In 1979, Taylor was one of the founders of Cineplex Odeon Corporation, which still lives on today as Canada's largest film exhibitor; Cineplex Entertainment.
