Founded in 1957 by Bob Newton, a race car driver who realized the need for a tire more suitable for racing than the street tires used in that era. At first, he produced softer retreaded tires, and eventually created his own new tire design in 1962.

A second stint in Cup racing proved successful with 4 wins in 1994, but Hoosier bowed out that same year due to a NASCAR rule that required them to bring enough tires for the entire field at each event, even though only a select number of teams used their product.
Hoosier's manufacturing plant is located in nearby Plymouth, Indiana.
