Paul Scholes was born and raised in Greater Manchester, and while also excelling at cricket, he began training with Manchester United at age 14. He turned professional in 1993 and made the professional squad for the 1994-95 season. During his tenure as midfielder for the Red Devils, the team won 11 Premier League titles and two UEFA League titles. Scholes played for England in both the 1998 and 2002 World Cup Tournaments.
Scholes is the fifth-most penalized player in Premier League history, having received 97 yellow cards and 4 red cards during his career. He is also the second-most penalized player in Champions League history.
Scholes married Claire Froggatt, his childhood sweetheart, in Wales in 1999. They have three children together, including netballer Alicia Scholes.
