Trabant 601 Universal

Trabant 601 Universal (StreetView)
The Trabant 601 (or Trabant P 60 series) was a Trabant produced by VEB Sachsenring from 1963 to 1991. Most East Germans had a love/hate relationship with their "Trabi," making it one of the most well-known and ridiculed symbols of East Germany. Movies such as Go Trabi Go made the Trabi into a way East Germans could laugh "not precisely at themselves, but at the absurdities of the system under which they lived until last year." Stephen Kinzer of The New York Times likens the Trabi as a symbol for the people who built it, who "survive[d] through difficult times and ultimately triumph[ed]".
