1974-1978 Jeep Cherokee SJ

Fairbanks, Alaska (AK), US
Named for the Cherokee Native American tribes, the Wagoneer-inspired full-size SUV first appeared in the dealerships in 1974. The term "Sport Utility Vehicle" was coined from a sales brochure promoting the Cherokee in its debut model year. Power came from AMC-sourced 110 hp, 4.6 liter I6 and V8 (5.9 liter 175 hp, and 6.6 liter, 195 hp) engines, and a diesel engine developed by Peugeot was offered too, but it is rare. Cherokees equipped with the 6.6 liter V8 house what remains the largest engine ever put into a production Jeep.
