Born to a working class family in London, the aspiring actor found his calling in primary school. He would go on to perfect is craft in university. Rickman was classically trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC).
Rickman's break out cinematic role was as the terrorist Hans Gruber in Die Hard. From there his film repertoire increased extensively. He appeared in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, and won the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. He also was in Quigley Down Under, Truly, Madly, Deeply, An Awfully Big Adventure, Sense and Sensibility, Galaxy Quest, Love Actually, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. But Rickman may be best known for his film performances as Severus Snape in the Harry Potter series.
Active from 1974 to his death in 2016, Rickman enjoyed a long and accomplished career. Known for his brooding, and commanding voice, Rickman was one of the most emotionally gripping actors of his time. Rickman has earned an Emmy, a SAG Award, a Golden Globe, and a Bafta Award. He married his first love and they stayed together until his death. They had no children. Tragically, he was taken well before his time by pancreatic cancer.
