Archibald Cox was a lawyer, legal scholar and professor. As a Harvard Law professor, he was an early expert on federal labor law.

Cox became a household name when he was appointed Special Prosecutor to oversee the federal criminal investigation into the Watergate Scandal. After issuing a subpoena for the secretly taped recordings of President Nixon's Oval Office conversations, Cox was ordered by administration officials to stop investigating. When he refused, he was fired by Nixon in what is now knows as the Saturday Night Massacre, which set in motion Nixon's impeachment proceedings.
