August Freiherr von der Heydt was a banker and minister in the last cabinet of the Prussian Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck. After his death in 1974, his son rented the villa to Liu Xihong, the first ambassador to the German Empire from China. On 17 March 1937, the property was sold to the Bayerische Vereinsbank and acquired by the German Reich on 10 March 1938 . Until the end of the Second World War in 1945, it was the official residence of Reich Minister Hans Heinrich Lammers , head of the National Socialist Reich Chancellery. Today it serves as the headquarters of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation.
