Kinshasa native and former NBA basketball player Dikembe Mutombo used some of his money and raised more money to build this $29 million facility. The hospital opened September 2006 and was the first modern facility to be built in the area in more than 40 years.

The hospital is named after Dikembe's mother who died of a stroke in 1997.
