The Class 142 had a ‘railbus’ body which shared much with the Leyland National bus, an integrally constructed single decker bus which was widely used in the UK in the 1970s and 1980s.

96 Class 142s were built between 1985 and 1987 and remained in services following refurbishment until 2020.
