Matthew Webb was the first person to swim the English Channel without artificial aids. He accomplished this in August 1875 in a little under 22 hours. He died in tragic circumstances, whilst trying to swim across the Niagara River below the Falls, where he died. His body was recovered four days later and he was buried at Oakwood cemetery.
