Cleaven Dyke (Cursus)

Cleaven Dyke (Cursus)

Dunkeld, United Kingdom (GB)
The Cleaven Dyke is an impressive Neolithic structure known as a "cursus". The Cleaven Dyke was originally thought to have been a type of Roman defense system when it was discovered. The site has a total length of 1,8km. The trees growing on the cursus have all been cut down to make it more visible from both the ground and air. 350 metres of the southeastern end of the cursus has been demolished but is visible as cropmarks.

A cursus is a Neolithic structure that consists of parallel embankments and ditches that are connected by embankments at each end of the cursus. They are among the oldest structures on the British Isles and are found as cropmarks all over the landscape of Ireland and the UK. The most famous cursus being the one at Stonehenge and the longest being the Dorset Cursus.
