On Friday 22nd December 2023 the British newspaper, The Guardian, reported that 100 ancient beech trees had been felled near the east Devon village of Colaton Raleigh.
It was reported that residents of the village believed the trees had been felled by the Forestry Commission without consultation. The Forestry Commission, however, responded that the felling had been carried out following an application from a local landowner.
The trees had been located at a site of special scientific interest (SSSI) and a special conservation area.
