The Alamo Theatre at this location opened in 1949 and hosted music competitions and concerts by artists like Nat "King" Cole, Elmore James, Cab Calloway and Dorothy Moore. It was Moore who after winning several competitions at the Alamao secured a recording contract. The Alamo closed in the 1980's but was restored and reopened in 1997. Today the theatre hosts the occasional event as apart of the Farish Street revival.
