The Edgbaston Canal Tunnel takes the Worcester and Birmingham Canal below Church Road and through a sandstone ridge in the Birmingham suburb of Edgbaston a few miles southwest of the city centre and the famous Gas Street Basin.
The brick-lined tunnel has a single tow path on the western bank of the canal and did not require the barges to be ‘legged’ though its 105 yards (96m) length. The canal through the tunnel remains wide enough for narrowboats to pass each other.
The canal tow path in recent years has become a popular cycle and walking route in to Birmingham city centre and for this reason the tow path has a metal handrail alongside the canal bank and is lit with LED lighting.
