Floresta Estadual do Trombetas was created in 2006 to achieve sustainable use of the forest and other environmental resources in such a way that the this was compatible with the conservation of biodiversity.
The park covers an area of 3,025,667ha in the North Channel of the Amazon River and is rich in biodiversity including species of birds, mammals, fish, reptiles and amphibians.
At its establishment the park was seen to have potential for scientific studies, managed forest use, mining and also ecotourism.
