Florence Adele Vanderbilt was the granddaughter of business magnate Cornelius Vanderbilt and the wife of financier Hamilton Twombly. "Florham", a 800-acre estate at the time, was built for the couple as a summer residence from 1894-97. Vanderbilt owned it until her death in 1952.
In 1958 Fairleigh Dickinson University purchased 187 acres of property, including the Mansion and related buildings, for its Madison campus, now the College at Florham.
