This facility was once the home of the 649th Aircraft Control and Warning Squadron and was part of the USA’s early-warning system.

Since 1975 when the Air Force withdrew the Federal Aviation Administration has had full control and continues operate it today as a long-range radar tower for tracking commercial aircraft

The rotating radar is contained inside the “golf ball” dome to protect it from the elements particularly the high winds which buffet Apple Orchard Mountain.
